I have been busy working on some fun new products for my booth this fall. Mostly working on patterns and new uses for recycled fabric and book pages. Today I made this… a lovely tea wallet. My daughter is a huge tea drinker and this is a great way to carry tea with her rather than paying big bucks for something she has at home. Still in the prototype phase.

On this lazy Sunday I have been cleaning and organizing my workroom. So much to do! But, it is gratifying to see all of my tools hanging on the pegboard and new* drapes on the windows. But, I couldn’t stop the drive to do something creative as well. SO… I just completed a new pattern for a checkbook cover using discarded book pages. I hope to show off a completed prototype very soon!

*The curtains are new to me - vintage J.C. Penney drapes with a lovely bright red pattern!

Digging Through the Rubble...

This afternoon I stopped by my favorite bookstore to say hello. I wasn’t really thinking about picking up the discards available there today, just dropping by because I haven’t in a while. The owner asked if I had time and pulled me outside to dig through the recycling. So, I am out there, hair in my face, sweating, sorting through what is basically garbage to most, but total treasure to me, and I look up and see her sister, coming out to the dumpster after she has been going through used toys, and tell her, you know, this is a hell of a way to do business, huh? She laughed and we agreed we really wouldn’t have it any other way.

Previously wet, some a little moldy and warped books are now in my possession. SCORE! Look for great new notebooks coming your way. Oh, and I haven’t made little notepads in a while from paperbacks but there were about 50 books out there that I couldn’t resist - look for those notepads to come back soon.

If you are not familiar, these notepads are yet another byproduct of the notebooks made from the hardback discards I find. When I make a notebook there is a large chunk of paper that is basically wasted when cutting the paper to fit the covers. I save those cuts and when I have time I use discarded paperbacks to create notepads. Seriously, I do all I can to use the entire book and all scraps created in the process. That is why you will always find ANOTHER Sassy! Product available from AS!P.

AS!P came to be from a love of tools (real, big, industrial ones) & creating.. Named for a simple reason — I keep making new things. The new products are not flights of fancy. They’re a way to use every scrap. My grandparents influenced me in two ways — “Waste not, want not” & a love of craft, the love of creating. The notebooks I salvage are from discarded books that I’ve rebound with quality, text weight paper with some original pages interspersed. Surplus pages become buttons, mirrors, hair ties… The point is to rescue the vintage aesthetic & create something new.

I am fascinated by this process. As always, it makes me want to go hang in a print house for a week. I have an unnatural attraction to large machinery.

Watching this video makes what I do even more meaningful to me - sure, some call me Book Killer, but to me, it really is about preserving that which is no longer used and making it useful again.

What an amazing opportunity! Spread the word and help Charles Clay in any way you can.

Charles Clay has been living in the Alton Park community for over 50 years. About 30 years ago he began recycling and ever since then he has been providing work for people in his neighborhood.

The work is pouring in but until he finds a way to expand, he can’t take on more clients. Fortunately there is an empty lot right next to his current outfit, which could be the answer to his growing pains.

Help Charles connect with the right people in the right places to create jobs for people in his very own community.
